HOW TO PREPARE YOUR LAWN FOR SPRING

As a Midwesterner, Spring time can seem like a never-ending project when it comes to lawn care. Lucky for you, we have some tips to help your lawn grow strong this Spring!

Tips for Spring Lawn Care:

- Got snow? Shovel down snow drifts or piles to help prevent snow mold.

- Clear winter debris. It’s a good idea to remove any branches, sticks, leaves and small weeds to tidy up the lawn and make mowing easier.

- Start your lawn from seed. Though fall is the best time to start a new lawn from seed, you can also do it in spring. If this is the case for you, don’t wait for late spring; your lawn needs to get established before summer heats up.

- Wait to aerate. Soil aeration reduces soil compaction, improves nutrient uptake, and strengthens grass roots, but only if done at the correct time. A good rule of thumb is to wait until May or June to aerate soil. The benefits are far greater if you wait until the soil temperatures are warmed up and the grass is actively growing.

- Top dress your lawn. To give your lawn a shot of the nutrients it needs, top dressing your lawn with organic compost will help the growth of new grass. Click here to find where to buy Busy Bee’s organic compost.

- Hold back on the fertilizer. To ensure your grass makes the most of fertilizer application, wait to apply an organic fertilizer until later Spring. Contact Busy Bee to buy organic liquid fertilizer.

- Assess weed tolerance. Even the most astutely managed lawn can develop weeds now and again. Lawns managed chemically for many seasons may need time to adjust and thrive. Understanding weed and chemical tolerance levels will help you decide on what needs to be adjusted to ensure you lawn stays healthy and happy.

You are now prepared for the Spring fun!
